When does a wine vintage truly begin in Bordeaux?

In Bordeaux, the story of a wine does not begin with the harvest, nor with the first ripe grapes of late summer. It starts much earlier, in the quiet transition from spring to early summer.

This is when vineyards enter one of their most discreet yet decisive stages: flowering.

A discreet yet essential transformation

Around May and June, depending on temperature and seasonal conditions, the vine begins to flower.

Tiny green blossoms appear along each shoot, so subtle they often go unnoticed. Yet each one carries the potential to become a grape.

A single vine can produce several hundred flowers. But only a portion (typically around 30 to 50% ) will develop into fruit. This stage, known as fruit set, marks the first real step toward the future harvest.

A moment measured in days

Flowering is remarkably brief.

The entire process unfolds over approximately one to two weeks, making it one of the most time-sensitive phases of the vine’s cycle.

Unlike many plants, the vine does not rely on insects. It self-pollinates quietly, without fragrance or visible blooming, a process that is almost invisible, yet fundamentally important.

A fragile balance

Despite its discretion, flowering is highly sensitive to external conditions.

A few days of rain can disrupt pollination; wind may interfere with fertilization. Temperatures below 15°C, or sudden heat, can affect the vine’s natural rhythm.

In Bordeaux, where the oceanic climate brings both freshness and variability, these factors are decisive. The conditions during this short window can influence not only the quantity of grapes, but also their uniformity, which later plays a role in the overall balance and quality of the wine.

Where the vintage takes shape

For winegrowers, flowering is a quiet turning point.

Long before the grapes are visible, and well before harvest is even considered, the foundations of the vintage are already being set. A few days in spring can shape months of work to come.

Understanding this stage is key to understanding wine itself, not only as a finished product, but as the result of a living process guided by climate, timing, and careful observation.
