When does the vine cycle begin in Bordeaux? Understanding budburst...

In Bordeaux, the story of a wine begins long before the first grapes appear. It starts in early spring, when vineyards across the region awaken from winter dormancy and enter the first stage of their annual cycle: budburst.

The first visible sign of the season

Between March and April in Bordeaux, the vine begins to come back to life.

Small buds, which have remained dormant throughout winter, gradually open to reveal the first leaves. This stage, known as budburst, marks the official beginning of the vine’s vegetative cycle. At this point, growth resumes. The vine starts to develop new shoots, setting the pace for the entire season ahead.

A moment shaped by timing and temperature

Budburst does not happen on a fixed date. It depends largely on temperature.

In Bordeaux, it typically occurs when average daily temperatures reach around 10°C, allowing the vine to restart its metabolic activity. A mild winter or early spring can lead to an earlier budburst, while cooler conditions may delay it.

This timing is crucial, as it determines the overall rhythm of the vine’s development, influencing subsequent stages such as flowering and, ultimately, the harvest.

An early stage, highly exposed

Despite its promise, budburst is one of the most vulnerable moments in the vineyard.

The young shoots are delicate, and particularly sensitive to spring frost, a known risk in Bordeaux during March and April. Even a brief drop below freezing can damage the newly formed leaves, affecting the vine’s ability to grow properly.

According to data from the French Wine and Vine Institute, frost events can significantly impact yield by reducing the number of viable shoots at this early stage.

The foundation of the vintage

While it is a rather quick stage in the vine development, budburst plays a defining role in the future of the vintage.

It establishes the starting point of the vine’s cycle and influences the timing of all subsequent stages. A well-balanced budburst allows for a more even development of the vine, while disruptions at this stage can echo throughout the season.

In this sense, the vintage begins not with the grapes, but with the first signs of life on the vine.

A different way to understand Bordeaux

Understanding budburst is to understand that wine is shaped long before it reaches the cellar.

It is the result of a living cycle, guided by climate, timing, and careful observation. Each stage, no matter how discreet, contributes to the character of the final wine.
